The Fernery is a perfect base for families and groups of friends who want to enjoy the best of the great outdoors that North Devon has to offer.
To enjoy Ilfracombe fully, every visitor should take to the water at some stage, there are the trips to Lundy Island, or coastal cruises along the coast including seal and wildlife safari and white water adventure. Ilfracombe is a good central base to visit surfing beaches nearby. Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton are all great places to surf and are between 10 - 20 minutes drive away. Board and wetsuit hire is freely available if you don't have your own and there are several surf schools offering training from beginner up to advanced level for both children and adults. Ilfracombe also has its own indoor heated swimming pool. Ilfracombe is the ideal base for a cycling or walking holiday. The Tarka Trail (the old railway line, now a cycle path) is a popular route and the North Devon Coastal path (part of the South West Coastal Path) runs along the sea front. Exmoor, criss-crossed with walks and cycle routes is only a twenty minute drive away. Some of the regions finest golf courses are within a short drive of Ilfracombe offering a challenge for golfers of any experience. Including Ilfracombe and the challenging championship links courses at nearby Saunton Sands and Royal North Devon, which is the oldest links course in the country. |
